Alex Eala and “Laban lang”

Once in a while, inspiration arrives in the middle of a tennis match. In the fighting spirit we Filipinos call “laban lang“.

✨ Brightest Stars in Dark Times ✨

I started playing tennis about two decades ago.
The moment that sparked it was watching the final match of Steffi Graf at the 1999 French Open. Something about that match stayed with me. Soon after, I picked up a racket myself.

That is why I find it inspiring to watch the rise of Alex Eala, a young Filipino tennis player who has been steadily building one of the most promising careers in international tennis. And is already an inspiration to many in the Philippines and beyond.

What strikes me most about her is her composure. Even when facing opponents who are far more experienced or highly ranked, she remains calm and focused. There is a quiet determination in the way she plays, a kind of “laban lang” spirit. Just keep fighting. Never give up. One step at a time.

Equally remarkable is the respect and kindness she consistently shows toward her opponents. In a highly competitive sport, she reminds us that competitiveness does not have to mean hostility. Strength and grace can coexist.

Tennis is a sport where success often depends on strong institutional support, long training pipelines, and access to global competition. Coming from the Philippines, the path is rarely straightforward.
Yet Alex Eala has continued to rise step by step.

“Isa-isa“ (one step one step) as she would loudly whisper to herself and to a whole nation.

Training abroad and competing internationally, she has shown that talent and dedication can travel far beyond the expectations placed on where someone comes from.

For many Filipinos around the world, watching her compete is more than just sport. It is a reminder that excellence can emerge from places that are often overlooked in global arenas. And maybe for future Filipino athletes and Filipinos in general the narrative will shift: from “success despite of“ to “success because of“ their origin.

In difficult times, we often focus on what is lacking. But sometimes the brightest stars appear quietly and incrementally. In years of persistence that nobody sees. In the focus of a young athlete. In the courage to step onto courts where few from your country have stood before.

Small lights.
But lights that travel far.
And somewhere, a young person watching today may be picking up a racket for the first time.
